Headache Remedies

There are lots and lots of headache remedies that you can use to alleviate the pain. They may be drugs, natural cures found around the house or complementary therapeutic techniques. Everybody suffers from a headache every now and then, and the causes are not always illness-related. In the following lines I will refer only to the remedies and treatments for common headaches that are not symptoms of specific ailments or disease. The frequent causes for such headaches are:

  • incorrect body posture;
  • stress at work or at home;
  • insufficient sleep;
  • crash diets.

Headache remedies

For body posture

Too much time spent at the desk or working in an uncomfortable position causes the back and the neck muscles to contract. Pain follows right away.

Take a break from work and stand up. Make some moves for the back to eliminate the tension or rub your neck and shoulders.

Physical exercises also help eliminate the tension, soothe the muscles and eliminate the discomfort at the level of the head. Make sure you exercise consistently at least three times per week.

For stress alleviation…

The entire hustle-bustle of life is stressful, particularly in modern times when it seems that you don’t even find an hour for yourself.

A combination of massage and aromatherapy releases stress and eliminates headaches. You can gently rub some lavender oil at the temples and on the forehead, and your mood and comfort level will improve immediately.

Regular physical activity, preferable outdoors is also credited as one of the best stress relieving methods.

Yoga, Qi Gong and abdominal breathing further calm the nerves and eliminate tension headaches.

None of the above are traditional headache remedies. They represent strategies, lifestyle options and personal choices to eliminate the stress and turmoil of social, professional and emotional life that often disturbs the normal body-mind functionality.

For sleep deprivation…

Lack of sleep causes irritability, frequent headaches and inability to concentrate. Unless there is a medical cause for insomnia, herbal remedies and relaxation techniques can help you rest well at night.

A herbal infusion of tilia, passionflower and lavender soothes the nerves and induces sleep. A glass of warm milk sweetened with honey has a similar effect.

A warm bath taken before going to bed and some relaxation music also does the trick for a full-night sleep. In the morning you’ll feel refreshed, without any sign of headache and ready to plunge into daily activities.

For crash diets…

Headache remedies for crash diets are indirect. First of all, you should resume a balanced eating pattern, to ensure an optimal intake of nutrients. Headaches don’t always accompany food deprivation, yet, they have been frequently associated with a persistent sensation of hunger.

In case you suspect that there might be another explanation for the headaches, besides the situations above, contact the doctor right away. There might also be other symptoms that you might experience, and they could point to a health condition.

Natural homemade headache remedies can be used at any time, provided that they match the health problem.
